Questions & Answers

Everything you want to know about tallow face balm, waterless skincare, and barrier repair.

Honest answers from a certified cosmetic formulator — no marketing jargon, no vague promises.

What is a tallow face balm?

A tallow face balm is an anhydrous (waterless) moisturizer built on rendered animal fat — specifically, the hard suet fat surrounding the kidneys. When properly rendered, tallow becomes a clean, odorless, cosmetic-grade lipid base.

What makes tallow exceptional for skincare is its fatty acid profile. Palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids — the same lipids that make up your skin's own sebum — are present in ratios remarkably close to human skin. This means tallow doesn't just sit on the surface. It is recognized by the skin and absorbed efficiently.

The Restorative Face Balm uses grass-fed tallow from heritage Senepol and N'dama cattle raised on St. Croix, USVI — traceable to the farm and the breed. See the full ingredient breakdown.

What does anhydrous or waterless skincare mean?

Anhydrous simply means "without water." Most conventional moisturizers are 60–80% water, which means you need emulsifiers to blend oil and water, and preservatives to prevent microbial growth in the water phase. Both are common sources of skin irritation.

In an anhydrous formula like the Restorative Face Balm, every gram is functional — tallow, botanical jojoba macerate, beeswax, and concentrated actives. Nothing is diluted. Nothing evaporates off your skin thirty seconds after application.

Why this matters

Because there is no water in the formula, the Restorative Face Balm requires zero preservatives, zero emulsifiers, and zero synthetic stabilizers. The result is a fourteen-ingredient INCI list with nothing to hide. See the full list.

What is a barrier repair balm?

Your skin barrier is the outermost lipid layer that holds moisture in and keeps irritants out. Think of it as mortar between bricks — the "bricks" are skin cells, and the "mortar" is a mix of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.

When the barrier is compromised — from aging, dryness, over-exfoliation, or harsh cleansers — skin feels tight, flaky, reactive, or perpetually dehydrated no matter how much moisturizer you apply. A barrier repair balm delivers concentrated lipids (like tallow, jojoba, and beeswax) that replenish what the barrier has lost, rather than temporarily coating the surface with water-based moisture that evaporates.

Is tallow good for dry, mature skin?

As skin ages, it produces less sebum and the lipid barrier becomes thinner. This is why mature skin tends toward dryness, fine lines, and a feeling of tightness that water-based lotions can't resolve — they evaporate before they address the underlying lipid deficit.

Tallow is naturally rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K as naturally occurring constituents, along with the fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic) that aging skin produces less of. A concentrated tallow balm delivers deep, lasting lipid replenishment — not a temporary surface film. Many women over 50 find it replaces multiple products in their routine.

Can I use a tallow balm if I have sensitive skin?

The Restorative Face Balm contains no water, no preservatives, no emulsifiers, and no synthetic stabilizers — which are among the most common irritant sources in conventional skincare. The formula has fourteen INCI-listed ingredients, and every one of them is documented with full safety data.

That said, every person's skin is different. We always recommend a patch test: apply a small amount to your inner forearm, wait 24 hours, and check for any reaction before using on your face.

A note on essential oils

The balm contains frankincense, myrrh, and blue tansy essential oils at a combined dermal level within IFRA safety guidelines. If you have known essential oil sensitivities, patch-test first or consult your dermatologist.

Can I use this balm if I have oily or combination skin?

The Restorative Face Balm was formulated specifically for dry and mature skin types. It is a rich, concentrated lipid formula — 60% tallow, 15% beeswax — designed for skin that is under-producing its own oils. If your skin is oily or combination, this balm may feel heavier than what your skin needs. We are developing lighter formulations for the future, but for now, the Restorative Face Balm is purpose-built for women who need deep nourishment.

Will this replace my entire skincare routine?

For many women — especially those with dry or mature skin — yes. The Restorative Face Balm is designed to be a single-step moisturizer that replaces a multi-product routine of serums, creams, and oils. Cleanse, then apply the balm. Morning, night, or both.

That said, we do not replace your cleanser or your sunscreen. The balm is the nourishment step — what goes between cleansing and protecting.

How is FRO tallow different from other tallow skincare?

Traceability. Most tallow skincare brands use commodity-sourced tallow purchased through supply chains where the origin, breed, and feed of the cattle are unknown. FRO tallow is traceable to the individual animal — heritage Senepol and N'dama cattle raised on pasture at JBH Farms on St. Croix, USVI.

Rendering process. We use a slow, three-render wet method over approximately two weeks that removes impurities while preserving the fat-soluble nutrients. The result is cosmetic-grade tallow: clean, odorless, and ready for formulation. See our full rendering process.

Formulation, not cooking. The Restorative Face Balm is designed by a certified cosmetic formulator (Formula Botanica), not adapted from a kitchen recipe. Every ingredient is sourced with full COA, SDS, and IFRA documentation.

What is a botanical jojoba macerate?

A macerate is a botanical infusion where dried plant material is steeped in a carrier oil over an extended period, allowing the oil-soluble compounds to transfer into the carrier. The Restorative Face Balm uses a double maceration — two sequential extractions in cold-pressed jojoba oil — to maximize the concentration of lipophilic botanical actives.

The botanicals macerated into the jojoba are calendula, German chamomile, centella asiatica, and rose. Each was selected for its traditional use in soothing and conditioning the skin. Learn more about each ingredient.

Why double maceration?

A single-pass extraction has a saturation limit — the oil can only absorb so much from one batch of botanicals. By filtering and re-macerating with fresh plant material, we push the botanical concentration higher than a single pass allows. This is documented in our formulation SOP.

Where is the balm made?

Every jar of the Restorative Face Balm is formulated, poured, and labeled by hand at North Star Villa on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The tallow comes from JBH Farms on the island. The beeswax comes from hives we keep ourselves. All essential oils and CO₂ extracts are sourced from Eden Botanicals with full documentation. Read our story.

How do I apply a face balm?

Start with clean skin. Scoop a small amount (about the size of a pea) with clean fingertips, warm it between your palms for a few seconds, and press gently into your face and neck. The warmth of your hands helps the balm melt and absorb. A little goes a long way — you can always add more, but you likely won't need to.

Use morning, night, or both. If you apply sunscreen during the day, let the balm absorb for a minute or two before layering SPF on top.

How long will one jar last?

The Restorative Face Balm is 2 oz (56 g) of concentrated, waterless formula. Because there is no water content, you use significantly less per application than a conventional lotion. Most customers find one jar lasts approximately two months with daily use — which is why the subscription is set at a two-month interval.

Does tallow balm smell?

Properly rendered, cosmetic-grade tallow is virtually odorless. The Restorative Face Balm has a subtle, earthy-warm scent from the essential oil blend — frankincense, myrrh, and blue tansy — but it is not heavily fragranced. Most people describe it as grounding and understated.

Does it need to be refrigerated?

No. Because the formula is anhydrous (no water), there is no water activity to support microbial growth, so the balm is inherently shelf-stable at room temperature. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The beeswax component gives the balm structure, so it holds its form even in warm climates — we formulate on a Caribbean island, after all.

What does the subscription include?

The subscription delivers one jar of the Restorative Face Balm every two months at $100 (versus $125 one-time). You can pause, skip, or cancel anytime. No commitments, no contracts. We designed it this way because the balm works best as a consistent part of your routine — and we want to make that easy.

Do you ship to all 50 states?

Yes. The Restorative Face Balm ships from St. Croix, USVI to all 50 U.S. states and territories. Because the USVI is a U.S. territory, there are no customs duties for domestic shipments.
